Borobudur is the biggest Buddhist monument in the world! It is over 1,100 years old. We came to Java just to get the chance to see it. It was amazing! It was my brother's favorite place of the trip so far. We went to the top of it to see the sunset. We were the only people up there! My mom said that it was a very spiritual experience.
This is Borobudur. It is eleven stories high. On the bottom are carvings that show the life of Buddha. At the top three levels are "stupas" which have Buddha statues inside. The stairs at the bottom of Borobudur are really really big and hard to climb. When you get to the top, the stairs are smaller. Our guide told us that this is supposed to be like life. When you start learning something, it is really hard in the beginning. As you work harder and keep at it, it get's easier. I like that!
Our guide told us that Borobudur is the biggest book in the world. The carvings tell the story of Buddha. He was born as a prince named Siddartha. In the story, he decided that he wanted to become a monk to help people not be poor or sick. The carvings are for people who could not read. They could come to Borobudur and see the pictures and know the story of Buddha.
There are 504 Buddhas on Borobudur. They had an episode of Amazing Race from here. My mom and I love this show. The people on the show had to count the different Buddhas. It was really hard!
We met a lot of Indonesian people at Borobudur. They all wanted to practice their English on us and also have their picture taken with us. This reminded me of China.
This is a picture of my family at Borobudur.
Our guide said that this was the most peaceful and beautiful Buddha at Borobudur.

This arch is called a "keystone". If you take off the top stone, all the other stones will fall down. The top stone is keeping everything in place.
This is one of the stupas at the top of Borobudur. If you look inside, you will see a Buddha. It is supposed to mean that Buddha is inside everyone of us.
This is one of the stupas cut in half so you can see what is inside.
The sunset was really pretty at the top. In this picture you can see one of the volcanos in the distance.
